Permeable Concrete

What sets our permeable concrete apart is the way it is manufactured.

PERMEABLE CONCRETE NEW ZEALAND

Refining Permeable Concrete for New Zealand

Permeable concrete has been around for some time, but in many places it struggled to live up to expectations — poor mixes and inconsistent results limited its success. Permeable Concrete New Zealand was set up to change that. Drawing on research and experience from Australian Permeable Concrete, we’ve applied sound science and local know-how to develop a stronger, more reliable product that works in New Zealand conditions.

Together, we’ve produced more than 85 000 m³ of permeable concrete across projects in New Zealand, Australia, Italy, and the USA, with plans to extend into the Pacific Islands. Our Permcon mixes are tailored for each region — adapted to the local environment and built with materials that perform over time.

What makes our permeable concrete different is how it’s made. Instead of relying on generic, pre-mixed powders, we fine-tune every mix for local materials and weather conditions. That attention to detail gives better durability, longer life, and dependable performance on every job.

At Permeable Concrete New Zealand, we believe that combining science with an understanding of local ground and climate is the key to getting permeable concrete right. Our goal is simple — deliver a water-permeable surface that lasts, performs, and helps New Zealand build more sustainable, better-draining spaces.

FAQs

What is permeable concrete?

Permeable concrete is a type of concrete that allows water to pass through its surface, reducing runoff and improving drainage. It is commonly used for driveways, pathways, car parks, and other outdoor spaces.

How does permeable concrete work?

Permeable concrete has a carefully designed mix that leaves voids between the aggregates. This structure enables water to flow through the surface and into the ground, helping with natural water absorption and stormwater management.

Where can permeable concrete be used?

It is suitable for driveways, footpaths, car parks, courtyards, landscaping areas, and public spaces where water drainage is needed. It is commonly used in both residential and commercial projects.

Is permeable concrete strong and durable?

Yes, when properly installed, permeable concrete is highly durable and can withstand regular vehicle and foot traffic. It is designed to last in various weather conditions and environmental settings.

Does permeable concrete require maintenance?

Permeable concrete requires occasional cleaning to prevent debris or dirt from blocking the pores. Routine maintenance such as pressure washing or light sweeping helps maintain its permeability and effectiveness.

What are the benefits of using permeable concrete?

Permeable concrete helps to manage stormwater, reduces surface water runoff, prevents puddles, and improves groundwater recharge. It also reduces the risk of flooding and contributes to a more sustainable built environment.

How does permeable concrete compare to traditional concrete?

Unlike traditional concrete, permeable concrete allows water to pass through instead of pooling on the surface. This makes it a better option for areas prone to water buildup and drainage issues.

Can permeable concrete be used in cold climates?

Yes, permeable concrete performs well in cold climates as it helps prevent surface ice formation by allowing water to drain through. Proper installation is key to ensuring durability in freeze-thaw conditions.

What colours and textures are available?

Permeable concrete is available in a variety of colours and textures to match different design preferences. Custom finishes can be applied to suit specific project needs

How much does permeable concrete cost?

The cost of permeable concrete varies based on factors such as project size, mix design, and installation requirements. For an accurate quote, it’s best to contact our team.

Is permeable concrete environmentally friendly?

Yes, permeable concrete is an eco-friendly option as it helps reduce stormwater runoff, supports groundwater recharge, and minimises the impact of urban development on natural water systems.

Can permeable concrete be customised for different projects?

Yes, the mix design, colour, and texture of permeable concrete can be tailored to meet specific project requirements, ensuring both functionality and visual appeal.
